Jamila Woods Shares New Album ‘Water Made Us,’ Announces 2024 Tour

R&B

Singer and poet Jamila Woods has returned with her third album, Water Made Us, via Jagjaguwar.

The 17-track offering includes the previously shared songs “Tiny Garden” featuring duendita, “Boomerang,” “Good News” and “Practice” featuring Saba.

Water Made Us is a study on relationships,” explains Woods. “My heart is wired this way for a reason and I’m always seeking to understand it. These songs attempt to create new language to express my hesitancy, my ambivalence, my attachments, my obsessions.”

She adds, “Shoutout to all of my collaborators who inspired me and pushed me to grow through the process of making the album. I’m so grateful for the many lessons water teaches, especially surrender, lessons I stay learning again and again.”

Water Made Us is the follow-up to Woods’ 2019 sophomore album, Legacy! Legacy! The 13-track album was an ode to Woods’ creative and cultural heroes, with each song named after them.

Some of those heroes included funk singer Betty Davis, singer and actress Eartha Kitt, jazz musician Miles Davis, and writer James Baldwin, to name a few.

“With this album, I had to think about how I could sample things in a way that’s innovative in terms of lyric writing – citing interviews with some of these people, or referencing essays or poems, as opposed to making allusions in my singing,” Woods told Dazed in 2019. “I didn’t want to write about people who inspire me, but have them in the room with me. That definitely gave the writing more strength, and a reference to memory.”

Circling back to Water Made Us, Woods is set to embark on her headlining tour in 2024.

The Water Made Us Tour begins Feb. 1, 2024, in Seattle, Washington. From there, Woods will play across North America, hitting major cities such as Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., New York and Chicago.

On April 23, 2024, she will launch the U.K./Europe leg in London and conclude April 30 in Copenhagen, Denmark. (The tour dates are listed below.)
