Emerging R&B singer-songwriter Jai’Len Josey dials out on her new project, Conversations From A Payphone.
The two-track release, released on Hillman Grad Records/Def Jam Recordings, arrives ahead of her forthcoming tour.
With a clear and self-explanatory title, “Mixed Signals” featuring lyricist Matt McGhee, depicts Josey’s struggles with a man who is indecisive and plays with her heart. Even though she wants to be with him, she needs more clarity on where his head and heart are.
Josey expresses her suspicion in “Playground” that her partner’s feelings towards her and their relationship have changed. She desires honesty and communication to move forward, rather than being strung along and wasting her time and affection, both of which she gives willingly.
Discussing the new project, Josey tells Rated R&B, “This two-pack is the glimpse of what’s to come. It’s an even deeper ride into my mind as an artist and producer.”
Conversations From A Payphone is Josey’s first taste of new music since her Southern Delicacy EP, released this spring.
The EP marked her second and came after her supporting guest stint on Ari Lennox’s age/sex/location Tour.
“Southern Delicacy symbolizes growth. It’s the story of me, and all the situations and relationships that have molded me into the woman I’m becoming. All the experiences of my life in Atlanta, in the south, all made me into who I am,” Josey explained.
Josey also dedicated Southern Delicacy to her grandfather Willie C. Josey. “He was from Blackshear, GA, and he was the epitome of a Southern man: family-oriented, gentle giant, God-fearing, caring, a veteran. I have him, my family, and friends to thank for making me into a Southern Delicacy.”
Noted earlier, Josey is going on tour in support of Conversations From A Payphone.
The four-date tour begins Oct. 24 at Milkboy in Philadelphia and concludes Oct. 30 at Vinyl in Atlanta. Tickets are available now.
About what fans can expect on tour, Josey tells Rated R&B, “My alter ego is Josey, and her side of the story always comes out during the live show. It’s about the music, and showing folks I don’t need much but a stage, some lights and a mic.”
