J-Sol Can’t Escape ‘Toxic Love’ on New Song

R&B

J-Sol’s new single “Toxic Love” features a horn-mad partner treating him like a boy toy.

The tune’s production, helmed by Butta-N-Bizkit (John Legend, Ledisi, Mali Music), embodies an Afro-fusion vibe, while the lyrics depict the British-Nigerian artist’s inner turmoil with a woman who holds power over him.

J-Sol sings, ” I don’t even wanna beat up on it / We go on and on’ing / I don’t even wanna be there so often / But it’s alarming / Every time I see you, I fall back in you / Night till morning.”

Regarding the song’s backstory, J-Sol says, “‘Toxic Love’ delves into the difficulties of holding on to something harmful, conveying a relatable feeling of powerlessness in trying to break free.”

“Toxic Love” is J-Sol’s first proper single since releasing his Sol Searching EP in 2022. it also is the title track and lead single from his forthcoming EP, set to arrive in 2024.

According to press materials, Toxic Love came from a frank therapy session where J-Sol’s counselor lovingly told him he was toxic. He also gave more insight into the project, calling it “a healing journey about my experiences with love, from sexual relationships to platonic love, including friendships and family.”

Adding to this, J-Sol says, “I wrote and produced part of the songs during a trip to LA to find myself, but it was fully recorded in my bedroom and I executive produced and wrote every song.”

Doubling back to Sol Searching, the EP contains six tracks, including “Free” and “R4L” with Vedo, William Singe, and Mishon. J-Sol also released a video for “Sol High” from the project.
