The estate of Isaac Hayes has signed a deal with Primary Wave Music. The independent publisher company will manage various publishing interests of Hayes’ estate under the deal.
As part of the deal, the estate will gain access to Primary Wave’s marketing team and publishing infrastructure, which includes digital strategy, licensing, synchronization opportunities, as well as film and TV production. Additionally, the deal includes the name, image, and likeness of Hayes.

Hayes, who passed away in August 2008 due to complications of a stroke, achieved a Grammy and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction, six gold albums, three Grammys and an Oscar over the course of his career.
Hayes started as a songwriter and record producer at Stax Records, a southern soul record label that launched the careers of many legendary artists, including Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Booker T and more.
A series of songwriting and production triumphs for Hayes included “Hold On, I’m Comin’,” “Soul Man,” and “I Thank You.” All three songs were recorded by Sam & Dave.
Beginning his solo career in the late ’60s, Hayes released his debut album, Presenting Isaac Hayes. The following year, he scored his first top 10 album on the Billboard 200 with Hot Buttered Soul, his sophomore album.
Still with Stax Records, Hayes ventured into the world of motion pictures, wherein he contributed to the soundtrack of the 1971 Blaxploitation movie, Shaft.
The soundtrack comprises 15 tracks, including 12 instrumentals and three vocal performances, with “Theme from Shaft” being the movie’s score as well.
Shaft (Music From the Soundtrack) was a groundbreaking piece of work, as it was the first-ever double album of original recordings to be released by an R&B/soul artist.
The 1971 Academy Awards marked a historic moment as Hayes became the first Black recipient of the Best Original Song award for his hit “Theme from Shaft.”
The same song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving Hayes his first and only chart-topper on the popular singles chart.
Hayes has had success on the charts with other songs, including “Don’t Let Go,” “Chocolate Chip,” “Do Your Thing” and “Joy (Pt. 1).”
Additionally, Hayes’ career included voice acting as Chef on South Park and guest appearances in over a dozen TV shows and movies.
