Full Album Stream: Lycanthrophy – “On the Verge of Apocalypse”

Metal

Full-length albums come slowly for Czech grinders Lycanthrophy. Despite forming in 1998 (first release in 2001), the group released their first album, Obscene Extreme, in 2003. A self-titled followed in 2010 and, thirteen years later, third LP On the Verge of Apocalypse finally touches down.

That’s not to say that Lycanthrophy haven’t been busy. The quartet released, by my count, 12 splits and a 20-year anniversary compilation in the time since their self-titled album, keeping their skills sharp. And sharp they are on On the Verge of Apocalypse, an 18-track ripper that gets right to the point and doesn’t overstay its welcome. Lycanthrophy draw influences from fastcore and powerviolence, particularly on songs like “Waiting for Death,” but they’re at their best on songs like “1000 Years Old Dust,” which really leans into the old-school grind sound.

On the Verge of Apocalypse delivers everything one could want in a good grindcore album, from blast beats and frantic riffs to a varied high-and-low vocal approach. It’s out on July 7 via Horror Pain Gore Death but you can tune in below.
