Above emerged as Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready completed a stint in rehab. The guitarist birthed a new side project with bassist John Baker Saunders, whom he he met in treatment; Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin and Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley completed the lineup. McCready was blown away at how quickly the album took shape. During a 1995 interview with Guitar World, he noted the “spontaneous” nature of how Staley worked.
