Metal

Greetings, Decibel readers!

There’s a couple big names on the list below, especially for those of you who really love dissonant death metal or traditional-doom-done-right. But if you just want something brutal, there’s a new Malignacy out today as well.

Enjoy!

Crypt Sermon – The Stygian Rose

The previous decade saw a massive wave of neo-classical heavy metal bands come along, which was cool at first but like with anything else, became oversaturated pretty quickly. But Crypt Sermon was always different, and this record is a testament to the level of energy and atmosphere they bring to their sound. It’s not a retread of the metal that was prominent in the early-80s, but a modern vision of that spirit made cool and exciting again.

Malignancy – Discontinued

Is it technical brutal death metal? Or is it brutal technical death metal? Something to debate over the weekend as you let the riffs, pinch-harmonics and blastbeats hit you.

Perchta – D’muata

Heavily folk-infused black metal that still retains the ferocity of the core sound. This allows the band to bring interesting elements to the overall picture, while still keeping that picture unrelentingly cold and dark.

Ulcerate – Cutting the Throat of God

More than any other band, Ulcerate is synonymous with dissonant death metal, making them an essential point of reference on the modern metal landscape. This is the band’s follow-up to 2020’s Stare into Death and Be Still.

Vendel – Out in the Fields

Oh, hell yes. As you’d expect from Dying Victims, this is the kind of metal that wants you to brandish a sword and disappear into the forest. And the music is so epic, it’ll make you believe there just might be a dragon to slay out there!
