Independence suits BJ the Chicago Kid. The Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter just released his new EP Three under his M.A.F.E. Music imprint.
The three-track project follows his summer release 4 AM, which included guest appearances from Eric Bellinger and Lucky Daye. It contains two previously-shared singles, “Smooth” and “6 Months,” all of which were part of his fall edition of BJ Wednesdays.
The third track, “Making Me Mad,” is produced by Social House, who also masterminded BJ’s last song.
The creation of his latest EP felt liberating to BJ. “It feels good to be independent and finally be able to give my fans the music I’ve been making closer to the time it’s been created,” he said. “It’s an empowering feeling because I think as artists often, by the time a project comes out, we have emotionally detached from it.”
He added, “Three is special because this is very much my current takes or feelings on love and relationships instead of my thoughts from 1 to 2 years ago!”
In our interview with BJ, he hinted at the increased disbursement of new material now that he’s heading his career. He also detailed his 4 AM EP and the importance of his 2012 debut album Pineapple Now-Laters.
In October, KIRBY enlisted BJ for her latest album Sis. He Wasn’t the One.
