Emerging singer-songwriter Annie Tracy has joined forces with Robin Thicke for her new single “Close To You.”
Over lively instrumentation, produced by Mike Sabath, Tracy tries to come to terms with a sinking relationship. The agonizing part is she had a feeling things wouldn’t last but continued to deepen their connection.
Tracy sings in the first verse: “This is why I didn’t wanna go and meet your mama / Why do guys always want you to go and meet their mamas? / I knew I shouldn’t, I tried to make it stop / But you just couldn’t, couldn’t control your heart / But I knew this would hurt / This is why I didn’t wanna get close to you.”
Thicke echoes Tracy’s sentiment in the bridge, intoning: “I wasted all my love on you.”
Speaking on “Close To You,” Tracy exclusively tells Rated R&B, “I wrote this song in 2021 with producer Mike Sabbath in Los Angeles. I remember leaving the studio feeling like we created something really special and honest.”
She continues, “When my A&R/mentor, Tricky Stewart said that he shared the song with Robin Thicke this year and he loved it so much that he wanted to support the song and my journey by joining me on the record, I was blown away, humbled and grateful. He is the first artist that I will have shared a song with in my career thus far and what an insane artist to start with! He’s such a legend.”
“Close To You” is Tracy’s first song release following her ACT I EP, which dropped in June. The five-track project includes the lead single, “Times It By Two,” which has 868,000 Spotify streams and counting.
In August, she released a live rendition of “Times It By Two,” recorded in New York City.
As for Thicke, earlier this year he teased his ninth album is in the works. “New album coming soon,” he wrote in an Instagram caption.
The currently untitled album is expected to include his Yo Gotti-assisted single, “Brown Liquor,” released in September 2022.
In May, he premiered the official video for “Brown Liquor,” filmed in Little Havana, a neighborhood in Miami, Florida.
Thicke’s forthcoming album will follow his 2021 effort On Earth, and in Heaven.
