Interview: Sungrave Behind the Scenes on Cold Flesh and No One

We chatted with Denver-based atmospheric band Sungrave about their recent self-released EP, Cold Flesh and No One. The EP was written, produced, and performed by Sungrave and Creaturess as part of their fall 2025 Midwest tour. The cover art was painted by Denver-based artist Josh Porter, specifically inspired by the music and concept. Drums were recorded with Austin Minney at All Aces Studio. SUNGRAVE’s Nick Brazzel mixed the record at Sound In Time Studios and it was mastered by Felipe Patino of Green Door Recordings.

What are you all currently working on?

We’ve been deep in the writing process for our second album and will be performing at least one of the songs in its current form (at our upcoming shows. None of what we’re working on is filled out or set in stone, by any means, but we’re excited to play some new material and give a little taste of where our future work is headed!

Do you have anything else you want to promote right now or allude to?

We’re putting together a run of Front Range shows the weekend of May 29 – 31 with our friends Oyarsa and Pathos & Logos. The three bands will be playing in Fort Collins with Pulchra, Denver with Fainting Dreams for their EP release show, and in Colorado Springs. Beyond the run of shows in May, we’re planning a couple shows in the fall with some of our favorite Denver bands. And we’re continuing to write new material. The process is slow and thoughtful by design, but we’ll be working hard at it, and we’re going to try to continue to lean into collaboration with other Denver artists.

What do you most like about playing in Colorado as a band from there?

The number of incredible bands in our genre never ceases to amaze me. Every show we play is a show we’d already be at. We’re just stoked to be on the bill too!

It’s especially surprising because the music we make isn’t exactly accessible. It’s slow, heavy, and atmospheric. None of those descriptors are popular by themselves, let alone together, but there’s a real community here thatcontinues to show up and support it.

In such scary times politically and socially, why is live music so important?

In times of intense uncertainty and division, community is probably more important than ever. Live music creates a space for people to come together and connect in a way that’s direct and human. And it’s easier than ever to form opinions about people you’ve never met, especially from a distance or online. But when we show up for a show, we clearly have a deeply shared interest and that can be a powerful way of breaking down what otherwise might divide us.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

We’re just grateful to be part of this community, to share it with bands we truly believe in, and for all the support the Denver scene brings.

Upcoming Tour Dates:

5/29 – The Atrium – Fort Collins – w/ Pulchra

5/30 – Ante Up – Denver – w/ Fainting Dreams
