If you’ve been following the trajectory of Canadian mastermind Devin Townsend over the last decade or so, one title has consistently popped up in interviews — The Moth. It’s been described as a massively ambitious rock opera type thing that he’s been working on as his “life’s work.” Now, this coming May, the whole project will be released.
Spanning 24 tracks, The Moth tells a story of internal transformation. In it, the protagonist looks inward and tries to change things about themself that no longer work toward their goals and interests. I’m probably doing a terrible job explaining this, so here’s how Townsend himself put it:
“By digging in and sitting with themselves, an internal conflict is revealed, one they may have been resisting or unconsciously rationalizing for years.”
Additionally, Townsend said the album’s title reflects that introspective change.
“The most obvious metaphor for change within the concept of this project was a moth: from caterpillar to an entirely different creature – one so drawn to the light that it burns itself away. What remains is immutable – only the spirit.”
If that’s not a Devin Townsend-ass concept, I don’t know what is.
The final product will feature three different listening experiences:
- The main album: 24 tracks capturing the full narrative arc.
- The Moth – The Afterlife: Highlights the orchestral and choral arrangements for a more immersive listening experience.
- The Moth – The War: A live recording of the album’s debut performance in March 2025 in The Netherlands, capturing the emotional intensity of performing the work live.
In addition to Townsend’s own musical efforts, the album will feature some pretty impressive collaborators, including Steve Fai, Anneke Van Giersbergen, and Lynn Wu (Ou). He’ll also be joined by his long-time band members Darby Todd, Mike Keneally, and James Leach, along with orchestral contributors Joseph Stevenson, Niels Bye Nielsen, and the Noord Nederlands Orkest.
The Moth will be released on May 29, but you can preorder your copy today.
