Black Sabbath featuring Ian Gillan: What’s not to love? Apparently plenty, judging by Born Again‘s critical panning and disappointing sales.

Look beyond the dismal production and unfortunate album cover, though, and there’s a lot to love on Born Again. Gillan comes out swinging on album opener “Trashed,” unleashing his signature megawatt scream and keeping the intensity dialed to “11” for the bulk of the LP.

Gillan’s fiery vocals are accompanied by some of Sabbath’s darkest compositions to date. Even if the muddy production leaves much to be desired, it gives doomy dirges such as “Disturbing the Priest” and the title track a claustrophobic edge that suits their sinister riffs.

It all amounts to a record that never stood a chance with critics but endures as a rightful fan favorite.
