Paula and Dave Lombardo’s Venamoris Return to Punish Your Sins with “Contrapasso”

With the release of their sophomore album To Cross or To Burn now firmly behind them, Venamoris are back with yet another dark, sultry track titled “Contrapasso.” This time around, Dave and Paula Lombardo (yes, that Dave Lombardo) simply released a single track to remind the world of their musical journey as a couple that carefully slinks on the edges of musical genres like a stray cat on a fence.

For those that don’t know, the word “contrapasso” is a Latin for “suffer the opposite.” In Dante’s Inferno, it’s basically described as the only natural law that applies in the depths of Hell, stating that God’s justice means punishments would be directly related to the sins committed on Earth. I don’t know if that’s exactly what the Lombardos were going for with this song, but it’s a fun little bit of trivia, nonetheless…

Getting back on track, the song spans just under five minutes and floats along as most Venamoris singles do. Speaking of the track, Paula explained how the song was a “cinematic descent into emotional and psychological ruin.”

“As we move forward on our musical trek, phenomenology continues to scorch the way. ‘Contrapasso’ is the story of an antagonist’s eventual ruin… an offering created for a specific cycle to end.”
