Going back to the early ’80s, Chicago has a long reputation for noisy industrial rock. The home of Touch & Go and Wax Trax! Records, the city has churned out decades of aggressive, edgy bands. New trio, Burndy, follows that tradition in unconventional fashion, as illuminated on their new single. “Static,” taken from their upcoming self-titled debut. The track is a slow builder, that’s terse and nervous with big Joy Division energy and a side of Sonic Youth. Burndy’s unique lineup—Jessie Ambriz (bass), Sally Sachs (bassoon), and Megan Emish (electric ukulele/vocals)—creates a dark, paranoid vibe on the song with minimal instrumentation.

Burndy was produced by Megan Emish and Sanford Parker. It was recorded at Electrical Audio and Hypercube Studios in October 2023, and engineered and mixed by Sanford Parker. Mastered by Collin Jordan at Boiler Room Mastering. It’s set to be self-released on vinyl and digitally on May 2. Place your preorder here. Check out the live dates below.

Megan had this to say about the track:

“This song is about feeling like your brain is on edge and your teeth are going with it. You know it won’t end well but you can’t stop it or calm it down. It keeps building. More static. More noise. More outrage. It overcomes you. When (if?) you make it through, everything changes.”
