Bootsy Collins has lived an extraordinary life and played with extraordinary musicians. With his latest single, the legendary funk bassist pays homage to a couple of his favorites.
“JB’s Tribute Paster P,” is a celebration of drummers John “Jabo” Starks and Clyde Stubblefield. It invokes not just the sound of James Brown’s band, but the spirit of it too.
The track features an appearance by the JB’s 81-year-old trombonist Fred Wesley and a ’90s-inspired verse from rapper Harry Mack.
Although he no longer tours, Collins is as busy as ever. He spends most days recording in his Cincinnati studio. Next year, he’ll release his 23rd studio album Album of the Year #1 Funkateer.
Since his teenage years with his guitarist brother Catfish, Bootsy Collins has lived like a rock ‘n’ roll Forrest Gump. Outside of the JB’s and Parliament-Funkadelic, he’s collaborated with a variety artists from different eras.
You may remember him from 1990’s “Groove Is In The Heart” or the Fatboy Slim hit “Weapon of Choice.” More recently, Collins has connected with younger artists like Thundercat and Kali Uchis, who recorded “After The Storm” at his studio.
