2024 has not been too nice to some retailers. The post-pandemic, inflation laden economy is certainly not helping the situation in retail. Now, Walgreens is revealing store closings across the country for 2024.
Walgreens Is Closing Stores Across America
Cue “Another One Bites the Dust,” as the outlook for Walgreens in 2024 isn’t as good as they would like it to be.
According to Newsweek, Walgreens is in restructuring mode in 2024. They recently laid off an estimated 646 employees, and the chain is in the midst of closing an expected 150 stores in America.
A Walgreens spokesperson said, “We are focused on aligning our operational structure to best serve our patients and customers. This includes an evaluation of our distribution center operations in order to streamline capacities to best support our stores.”
Forbes reports that in January, the company announced a quarterly net loss of $67 million.
Why Is Walgreens Closing Stores?
In March, a Walgreens in the St. Louis area closed abruptly. Fox 2 Now St. Louis reached out for comment. They received some insight as to why some specific stores are being shuttered.
A spokesperson for Walgreens said, “When faced with the difficult decision to close a location, several factors are taken into account, including our existing footprint of stores, dynamics of the local market, and changes in the buying habits of our patients and customers, among other reasons. This location’s closure is due to unsustainable business performance.”
It looks like the plan for Walgreens is what’s to be expected: they are closing their most underperforming stores. The company does realize that it can cause quite the uproar for local residents when that happens.
“We apologize for the inconvenience,” the chain stated.
“We know that our customers and patients rely on our stores and trust our team members for their healthcare needs. And, when we must close a store, it affects them and their community. Our priority is to ensure a smooth transition for our customers and team members during this time.”
