Metal

Greetings, Decibel readers!

Definitely a lot here for the death metal crowd this week, with new ones from Fathomless Ritual and Vorus. But there’s plenty of room for fans of thrash (Devastator), blackened death (Volcandra) and some righteous metallic hardcore (Worst Doubt) as well.

Enjoy!

Devastator – Conjurers of Cruelty

A crushing, blistering, and … well, devastating blend of thrash, death and black metal. Of course, thrash definitely forms the basis of the sound, much in the way it does for bands like Midnight and Hellripper.

Fathomless Ritual – Hymns For the Lesser Gods

This is some badass death metal. The kind you turn on and immediately know it’s good. Definitely for fans of the groovy and hook-laden Finnish style.

Volcandra – The Way of Ancients

The second album from Louisville, Kentucky’s blackened-death metal masters. The band plays in the style of DissectionSacramentumNecrophobic with perhaps an echo of Dark Tranquility and Hypocrisy in there as well. It’s very well-produced but still has a sharp edge. If nothing else, it has all the catchy riffs you might need.

Vorus – Desolate Eternities

Oh man, this is so good. Death metal that makes you feel the danger! This Romanian four-piece plays raw and raucous death metal in the style of the old days, but with the hindsight of devotion informing every riff, growl and blast.

Worst Doubt – Immortal Pain

Absolutely MEAN metallic hardcore. Get a lot of Merauder vibes from this band, along with some older All Out War. This style of hardcore got severely played out over the last 20 years, but some bands still manage to make it feel fresh and brutal. Worst Doubt is one of those bands.
