“He Thinks He’ll Keep Her” hitmaker Mary Chapin Carpenter‘s gold-certified breakout record, State of the Heart, was released on June 13, 1989. The album, her second, includes songs such as “Quittin’ Time” and “Something of a Dreamer.” With a total of four songs from the project making the Hot Country Singles chart, State of the Heart peaked at No. 28 on the Top Country Albums chart.

After State of the Heart, Carpenter saw much success with her releases Shooting Straight in the Dark (1990), Come On Come On (1992), Stones in the Road (1994) and A Place in the World (1996). Their RIAA certifications range from gold to four-times platinum. Carpenter has, throughout her career, accumulated five Grammy Awards and two CMA Awards.

The talented singer-songwriter’s most recent album, the deeply personal The Dirt and the Stars, dropped in 2020. Flip through the photo gallery below to see some of our favorite live shots of Carpenter.
