SZA is continuing her chart domination. Her current single “Snooze” advances to No. 1 this week on Billboard’s Rhythmic Airplay chart and Mediabase’s rhythmic radio chart.
“Snooze” scoots Lil Durk and J. Cole’s “All My Life” to No. 2 after leading last week.
It’s the same circumstance at rhythmic radio, with “Snooze” replacing “All My Life” for the top spot. The former song, which topped urban radio in June, gained 6,528 spins with an audience impression of 18.7 million.
Circling back to the Billboard Rhythmic Airplay chart, “Snooze” marks SZA’s fourth leader on this list. The previous single, “Kill Bill,” topped the chart in March for three weeks.
Before that, SZA reached the top of the summit in March 2022 with “I Hate U” and “Kiss Me More,” her collaboration with Doja Cat, in 2021. It spent two weeks at No. 1.
“Snooze,” “I Hate U” and “Kill Bill” appear on SZA’s sophomore album, SOS, which has now spent 30 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart as of this week. The album is 10 weeks away from tying The Weeknd’s Dawn FM for the longest-running No. 1 on this chart. (Dawn FM spent 40 weeks at No. 1.)
SOS was released Dec. 9, 2022, via Top Dawg Entertainment/RCA Records. Days before SOS dropped, Rated R&B spoke with rising singer Leon Thomas about his experience co-writing and co-producing “Snooze” alongside his mentor Babyface.
“Man, that was tight… I played my album and [Babyface] gave me his notes and perspectives on certain things. He was saying, ‘Yo, I’m doing this collaboration album with a bunch of the R&B divas of our generation. We’re going to have SZA coming through.’ I was like, ‘Sign me up, I’ll be here tomorrow, sir!’ So I pulled up,” Thomas told Rated R&B.
He continued, “Me and my production partner Khris [Riddick-Tynes] were super nervous. SZA popped through, and she was so nice. I had met her before, but this was a great reintroduction to her new world of music. I’m glad that I was able to collaborate with such strong creators… The whole thing came together really fast. She wrote [‘Snooze’] in an hour. We weren’t sure if she was going to use it, so it’s a super blessing.”
Fans can expect to see SZA perform “Snooze” on leg two of her SOS Tour, which launches Sept. 20 in Miami, Florida.
Ahead of her tour, SZA will co-headline Made In America in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The two-day festival is set for Sept. 2 and Sept. 3. It will feature additional performances by Miguel, Tems, Coco Jones, Doechii and more.
