Sy’Rai Smith, daughter of R&B icon Brandy, is gearing up to release new music.
The R&B newcomer has announced her new single “On My Own,” set to drop sometime this month.
Sy’Rai shared a snippet of the track on Instagram along with the official artwork. “I’m still climbing into in my own / And I’ll be doing it on my own / Still getting better / I’m puttin’ it together,” she sings in the chorus.
“On My Own 5/?/2023,” she wrote in the caption, hinting that the song is coming soon. It will serve as the lead single from Sy’Rai’s upcoming debut EP.
In a recent interview with BET, Sy’Rai revealed that the EP is executive produced by Brandy, who also vocal produced every track.
Regarding the EP’s sound, Sy’Rai told Ty Cole of BET, “I’ve seen my mom in the studio all my life and I’m a perfectionist like her so it has to sound correct,” she said.
SyRai added, “I stack like crazy – a lot of melodic, driven music because I love melodies. I have that Brandy sound that people try and get – I can do it and it’s in my genes to be like her. Not trying to be copied but people call me the ‘New Testament’ so people will be very surprised by what I’m coming up with.”
“On My Own” will mark Sy’Rai’s first musical release since 2022s “Nothing Without You,” a duet with Brandy, featured on Disney+’s Cheaper By the Dozen soundtrack.
In 2020, Sy’Rai appeared on “High Heels” from Brandy’s seventh album, B7. “She’s a beautiful talent. She’s coming into her own and I’m just here to support her in every way possible,” Brandy told Rated R&B in a May 2020 interview.
Sy’Rai was recently featured in MTV’s new docuseries, Family Legacy, which includes interviews with children of legendary musicians.
The docuseries also featured Tron Austin (son of TLC’s Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas), Nathan Morris II (son of Boyz II Men’s Nathan Morris) and C.J. Wallace (son of Faith Evans and Notorious B.I.G.), among others.
The docuseries, which premiered April 25, can be watched on Paramount+.
