Today in Metallica: Weezer’s “Enter Sandman” and a Live Recording of “Through the Never”

Metal

So far, everything we’ve heard from The Metallica Blacklist — the upcoming album on which eight-trillion famous artists cover tracks from The Black Album to celebrate that record’s thirtieth anniversary — has suggested that the participants really took the material and made it their own. Love it or hate, there’s no denying that these musicians really got creative and took pains to not just release a rote recreation of the original song.

Enter Weezer, who are now in their twentieth year of being massively disappointing.

Their take on “Enter Sandman” sounds exactly the way you imagine Weezer doing a precise recreation of “Enter Sandman” would sound, only Rivers Cuomo is singing from behind a viscous layer of autotune, and they’ve made the guitar solo more Weezery — which is to say, they just play the song’s melody on guitar, and they stick in a little piece of “Buddy Holly” because reasons.

Of the two versions of “Enter Sandman” from The Metallica Blacklist that we’ve heard thus far — this and Juanes’ take — I think it’s by far the inferior iteration. But listen below and feel free to disagree with me even if it makes you wrong.

The Metallica Blacklist is out October 1, and can be pre-ordered here.

In related news, Metallica have released a live version of “Through the Never,” recorded in Sacramento, CA on my tenth birthday. That doesn’t have anything to do with anything, I just think it’s neat. Anyway that’s below, too.

The “Through the Never” recording is part of the upcoming thirtieth anniversary can’t-miss-it-or-your-grandma-will-die reissue of The Black Album. That’s out September 10, and can be pre-ordered here.
