Is High on Fire’s Jeff Matz the New Mutoid Man Bassist?

Metal

When Mutoid Man and now-ex-bassist Nick Cageao announced they’d parted ways amicably earlier this year, the band’s label Sargent House, teased their new, as-of-yet unannounced low-end maker as someone fans would already know and respect, saying:

“7 years ago on this day we announced signing @mutoidman 🖤 3 Albums later and I am delighted to say we are keeping them 🤟🏼This weekend @benjaminkoller and @stephenbrodsky will arrive to @thefarmfamily compound along with their secret new bass player to finish writing their next opus. We will of course miss Nick but just wait until you hear who is stepping in ….stay tuned, ROCK LIVES.”

Mutoid Man still haven’t announced who their new bass player is nearly two months later, but Sargent House may have spilled the beans… intentionally or not.

The PRP has grabbed a screen shot from the label’s Instagram stories that shows a bass player resembling Matz playing one of his newly minted Dunable Guitars signature basses. They also note that both of Mutoid Man’s two other members and the band’s main account follow Matz on Instagram, which wouldn’t otherwise be especially noteworthy but lends credence to the rumor in this context.

Here’s the screen shot of the IG story:

And here are some shots of the new bass:

It all seems to add up, right?

High on Fire fans, don’t worry; Matz performed with the band as recently as June, so it doesn’t seem like he’s vacating his post there. The band just added Coady Willis of Big Business on drums replacing longtime skinsman Des Kensel.

We anxiously await official word of Mutoid Man’s new bassist, whoever it ends up being, although the excitement of having Matz in the band is obvious. Let’s go!
