Weezer leader Rivers of Cuomo has contributed songwriting credits to many artists over the years. He’s also an avowed metalhead.
Turns out those two interests collided back in 2000 when Cuomo offered a newly written song called “Hash Pipe” to Ozzy Osbourne. The Prince of Darkness rejected the tune, which would go on to become one of Weezer’s most popular cuts.
Speaking to Guitar World, Cuomo recalled the exchange:
“Once, I think it was in 2000, he asked if I had any songs for him, and I just happened to have written ‘Hash Pipe.’ I sent it to him, but he didn’t end up using it. In another reality, it might be interesting to hear him singing that song.”
Ozzy, of course, has utilized a number of outside songwriters throughout his solo career, including Motörhead’s Lemmy Kilmister.
Weezer are currently promoting a metal-inspired album of their own, Van Weezer, and Ozzy is working on a new album as well, the follow-up to Ordinary Man (2020).
