Few bands summon the abyss like Coltsblood. Their sound is less music than it is an immovable force, a seismic shift beneath the surface of doom metal. With Obscured Into Nebulous Dusk, their upcoming LP on Translation Loss Records, the UK trio honors their roots while carving out a path of evolution—a record they describe as “pure escapism conjured from a primal instinct to create something loud, raw, and visceral.”
Today, Decibel is proud to unveil “Waning of the Wolf Moon,” a track that bassist/vocalist John McNulty calls a lament for the endling—the last of a species. Inspired by the extinction of wolves in the UK and the arrogance of humanity’s belief in its separation from nature, the song grieves for all creatures lost or teetering on the edge.
“As the song closes, the dying heartbeat of the wolf echoes the slow death of nature and humanity,” the band explains. “It reflects the waning moon, the end of a cycle, potentially for the last time. A haunting reminder of our interconnectedness and the weight of what we’ve forgotten.”
That grief manifests in Coltsblood’s signature funeral-march pacing, dragging the listener through a cavernous dirge before collapsing into a pulse-like outro that feels less like a song ending and more like a life fading away. The accompanying video—crafted by McNulty himself—only deepens the sense of loss, presenting stark and unsettling imagery to match the track’s suffocating weight.
Coltsblood call this album “a continuation of what we have always been—a cathartic outlet for everything too vast and unfathomable to put into words.” Few bands wield that catharsis as effectively.
Obscured Into Nebulous Dusk arrives May 30 via Translation Loss Records. Prepare yourself below.
