Of all the dudes in Metallica, Kirk Hammett probably seems like the chillest one of them all. He surfs on the regular, has an “extreme” meditation habit, and quite possibly has the best weed in metal. But that’s not to say the guitarist doesn’t have his screwups and outbursts from time to time. And as you’ll see in the videos below, people in attendance at the Detroit show this past Sunday got a front-row look at his wrath after he took a tumble on stage.
Now, plenty of people fall on stage and it can be embarrassing or lead to serious injury. But in the case of Hammett’s fall, he kinda got off lucky. It looks like the band had just finished “Moth Into Flame” and was transitioning into “Fight Fire With Fire.” At that point, the intro backing track to the Ride The Lightning classic is playing and the stage lights are low when Hammett hits the deck.
When it happens, Hammett looks like he falls on his side and kinda lays there for a second before getting up and unleashing his fury. Right off the bat, he throws his guitar — which probably costs more than my used 1992 Toyota Celica — to the edge of the stage as fans yell out “Man down!” Then you can see him just…. yelling. Not at anyone or about anything… just kinda yelling. Dude looked pissed.
We don’t know if there was some known problem with the stage and that’s why he fell or if he was just angry because of the embarrassment of falling in front of tens of thousands of people. Either way, it looks like the only thing that he got was a bruised ego in the tumble.
It’s a good thing that was the band’s final show on the first leg of the M72 World Tour. Hammett can dust himself off, take some time with good bud and a good wave, and get back in shape for the next length of shows, the dates and locations of which you can see below.
