Metal

You can’t beat the classic sounds, but you can definitely present them in exciting ways, which is exactly what Amammoth do on their new album, Distant Skies and the Ocean Flies. Steeped in doom, stoner and sludge influences from Sleep, Electric Wizard, Melvins and Black Sabbath, the Aussie trudge through seven tracks of amp worship.

Amammoth’s biggest strength is their sense of restraint. Of the seven tracks (plus one intro), only second song “Among Us” goes above six minutes; more than half don’t even crack the five-minute mark. This allows the strength of the riffs to shine through, rather than slowly distilling over the course of long, plodding songs.

“Our latest album, Distant Skies and the Ocean Flies, is about the mysteries of the ocean, diving into UFO conspiracies, government cover ups and human technology,” Amammoth tell Decibel.

Distant Skies is officially out on March 21 (pre-order info at the Bandcamp embed below), but you can stream the full record now.
